New Year’s resolutions are a time-honored tradition, but let’s be honest: they’re often hard to stick to. That’s where habit stacking comes in.
Habit stacking is a technique that involves adding a new habit onto an existing one, creating a “stack” of habits that become automatic over time. This can be an effective way to create lasting change because it allows you to gradually incorporate new habits into your daily routine, rather than trying to overhaul your entire life all at once.
Here are some benefits of using habit stacking to achieve your New Year’s resolutions:
It’s easier to stick to one small change at a time. If you try to make too many changes at once, it can be overwhelming and difficult to keep up with. Habit stacking allows you to focus on one habit at a time, making it more manageable and easier to stick to.

So, how do you get started with habit stacking? First, choose a habit you want to add to your routine. It could be something small, like drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning, or something bigger, like exercising every day. Next, identify an existing habit that you already do regularly. This will be the “anchor” for your new habit. For example, if you always brush your teeth after breakfast, you could stack your new habit of drinking a glass of water onto that existing habit. Every time you brush your teeth, you also drink a glass of water.
