As Valentine’s Day approaches, we’re surrounded by the buzz of romantic gestures and declarations of love. However, amidst the sea of heart-shaped chocolates and roses, let’s take a moment to explore a different kind of love—one that starts within.

Shifting Perspectives
It’s easy to get caught up in the notion that love should primarily be directed outwardly, towards others. Society’s romantic ideals often reinforce this belief, placing greater emphasis on loving others than on loving ourselves. But let’s challenge this perspective.

Turning Inward
Before diving into elaborate plans to express affection for others this Valentine’s Day, let’s redirect our focus inward. Take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate the incredible individual that you are.

An Exercise in Self-Appreciation

Love: Begin by reflecting on the qualities, traits, or actions you genuinely love about yourself. Whether it’s your kindness towards others or your resilience in facing challenges, jot down these aspects.

Like: Move to the “Like” column and note the aspects of yourself that you genuinely enjoy. This could include your sense of humour, creativity, or ability to empathise with others.

Admire: In the “Admire” column, acknowledge the qualities or achievements that you admire within yourself. Perhaps it’s your determination to pursue passions or your ability to overcome obstacles with grace.

Daily Practice
Carry this piece of paper with you throughout your day. As you navigate life’s moments, take note of new insights and observations about yourself. Allow this exercise to evolve organically over time.

Enhancing Connections
By prioritising self-love and well-being, you not only strengthen your relationship with yourself but also enrich your connections with others.

So, as Valentine’s Day approaches, I pose this question to you: will you be your own Valentine?

Embrace the journey of self-love and self-appreciation, and watch as it transforms not only your relationship with yourself but also your interactions with others.
